Question for video artists...

What kind of video editing software would you recommend? Which one do you swear by? Which one will do in a pinch? I'm in the market because I'd like to make some music videos, but please keep in mind, I'm an amateur; I've made a couple vids, but they are not exactly full of The Michael Baysplosions, or The Spielberg Awesomesauce. ^_^
