Anybody ever wonder what happened to all of Hermione's Muggle friends after she went to Hogwarts? I mean, she's an 11-year-old girl. She's not just friendless until she meets the wonder-duo, is she?

I wonder about her female friends too. Girls tend to hang around in groups between 11 and 15/16, and really, one can't live without girlfriends that listen to your complaints about stupid boys and periods.

Even more so, I wonder who is she. She is not even that close to Ron and Harry, as they don't know that much about her. Who does she cry with when she's sad? Ginny? There must be more to her life than the books show, as they have yet to show us she's a complete entity with, like, interests beyond learning, house elves and fighting evil ^^

Absolutely. I wonder if she is close with the other girls her year, or maybe some other classmates. Ginny, perhaps. I think they are good friends. But she has to have some sort of outlet instead of always being the outlet. I think Harry could really fill that post for her if he wanted to. They are very close in a lot of ways.

Nuhu, I don´t agree. I suspect Harry and her don´t have very much in common, like, at all. Jumping over the movies, there are many times in the books Harry makes her sound not like a friend, but an ally, "the girl we got stuck with" even. They didn´t know about Victor until Hermione showed up with him at the party. Considering age, gender an the speed the news must have traveled (international visiting quidditch star dating local bookworm), that must mean there´s not that much interest on the boys part. I can´t say much about Ron, but Harry seems to have an unwanted older sister/babysitter relationship with her.

I never read it like that. I always thought Harry and Hermione had a certain connection that Hermione and Ron never had, also that Harry and Ron never had. I think they definitely have varying interests. It's pretty obvious, as you point out. ^_^ But Harry does not treat her like something he has to deal with; on the contrary, when he and Ron were fighting, he and Hermione were hanging out more than ever, even if they weren't doing the things he used to do with Ron. I think Hermione fills a different slot than Ron in Harry's life. Maybe they aren't as close as all that. But I definitely don't get the sense that Harry merely tolerates her. I think he values her company, and that there are definite sister-parallels.

That doesn't mean all girls have that - I never did. If you have the misfortune to be female and different - be it prettier, smarter, unwilling to shut up and agree with the rest of the group for the sake of harmony, following your own interests instead of obsessing over boys, then you are going to be in for a very miserable time.

Maybe Hermione is like me. Maybe Hermione prefers to cry alone.

I guess it would depend on the make-up of the rest of the group. I was lucky to have several "out-crowd" girlfriends in elementary school who didn't flip out over the usual stuff like the other girls in our class. But I can also remember a period where I made a lot of my friends angry in high school by telling them to shove it when they wheedled with me to let them copy homework or borrow test answers or whatever. You're very right: stepping away and being different has its downsides. But then you can also learn who your real friends are, so it has upsides too.
