Because any way you slice it, it IS fanfic, even if it's published.
Been thinking about why fanfic gets such a bad rap from the world at large (i.e., nonsense, waste of time, bad writing, kid's stuff, etc. etc. etc). You know the drill. So, I'm listing off the market-acceptable fanfic that I've come across. Not only are these pieces published, several are considered literary classics, and I'm wondering what fic-naysayers would say if I changed the wording a little and called our work "derivative" instead.
So here you go. Please add on with your own faves. I'm not including movies/motion pictures/cartoons/anime/TV because, dude, we could go on and on and on and on (and on and on and on) forever with those. But novels, novellas, poems, short stories, plays, manga and comic books ('cause, yeah, fanart)... whatever else. If you think it's fanfic hiding in plain published sight, lay it on me.

~Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys (prequel remix of Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte)
~Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead by Tom Stoppard (remix of Hamlet by William Shakespeare)
~Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith (AU remix of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen)
~Dracula Undead by Dacre Stoker (future!fic and slight AU of Dracula by Bram Stoker)
~The Stars' Tennis Balls by Stephen Fry (modernization AU of The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas)
~Eaters of the Dead by Michael Crichton (remix AU of Beowulf, the ancient Anglo-Saxon epic poem)
~Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen (possibly crack!fic for The Mysteries of Udolpho by Ann Radcliffe)
...and people turn their noses up at fanfic. Psh.
So. Tell me more. Fight the snooty system. Just because it has a special "grown up" name doesn't make it any less FANFIC.
