Nov. 29th, 2004 05:47 pmCame across this last night. It distracted me from my homework for at least an hour. I had no idea such imbecility existed.
In the wake of my last two posts about Oliver Stone's Alexander... I give you this IMDB comment thread...
The most mind-bogglingly bizarre thread ever about why Alexander the Great MUST have been heterosexual.
*insert vomiting noise here*
I... honestly don't know how to respond to this thread. I was going to, for sure. Various aspects of it made me mad enough. But then as I was reading, the ignorance of half the people just sucked the life right out of me and I could do nothing more than stare in flabbergasted silence, my mouth gaping like a fish's.
Watch for the bits about Alexander being straight because he had wives, Tony the Tiger and George Washington, the evilness of homosexuality in the classical era, and that marvelous moment when they all suddenly switch to discussing Greece instead of Macedonia. Oh, and the person who decides to review the movie instead of staying on topic.
My personal favorite is the one who declares that "Alexander would have been Christian if he could have been, and all good Christians know that homosexuality is wrong" or some such blather.
All of my angry responses and shouting and utter surprise boils down to this single response:
You know what really bothers me? That these people keep applying our PRESENT DAY values and fears to the ancient Greeks, Macedonians, and Persians. Duh. Our values mean DICK. All these terms they are throwing around, like "homo/hetero/bisexuality" DID NOT EXIST BACK THEN. They are barking up the wrong tree entirely. NOT EVEN LOOKING AT THE ISSUE FROM THE RIGHT MINDSET. How dare they try to judge these cultures from our place here in the future? To render them right or wrong, saved or damned? And that whole bit about Christianity? MY GOD PEOPLE. WE ARE TALKING 300 YEARS BEFORE THE RELIGION EVEN EXISTED. Honestly. I want to smack some of these people.
I am so mad right now. Please do yourself a favor and read the thread. You will laugh your ASS off.
