Time for a rec day! And my rec choice today is... DEVON MAY. It's Celebrate Devon Day!

Granted, I don't know [livejournal.com profile] devon_may that well. But one of her fics (which will be recced here of course) was one of the first fics I ever came across on lj. She has a lovely compendium of H/D in her lj memories, and it is inundated with a charming, simple, and thoughtful writing style. Her work is addictive, and it just... rolls over you as you read. Devon is one of my favorite fandom authors because of the way her stories suck me in, engross me to the finish, and leave me quite satisfied... and that can be read any number of ways. *smirk*

Without further ado, the Devon List.

(Not disclaiming anything here, as usual. Pay attention to her disclaimers and ratings, as they cover a wide range)

First off, the fic that hooked me: A Different Kind of You (H/D rated NC-17)

Harry escapes his trying job by taking a trip... and running into someone he thought had died long ago. This is a work-in-progress, 10 chapters so far (the link takes you to Devon's Memory page where it is listed by chapter under ADKOY). Stunningly good voices for Harry and Draco, an intriguing and complex mystery-like plot (gaw, I love fics like that), and one of THE HOTTEST dance scenes you will ever read. Aside from that last part (*snicker*), I love this fic because the love story is gentle and not all wrapped up in nice pretty bows. Harry's discovery of self is wonderfully contrasted with Draco's nonchalant attempts to remain detached when he needs help most of all.

...

Love In Seven Days (H/D, rated PG-13)

The beginning of a relationship. This link gets you to three ficlets, actually, but the first is my favorite. I love the style, the way it's partitioned out day by day. Everything's here: awkwardness, fluff, angst, growth... I adore this one. This is my dream-Draco.

...

Whatever It Takes (H/D, rated R)

Draco finally figures out a way to help Harry. But that's all it is... really. This one broke my heart in a soft quiet way. I didn't even realize it until I found that the story was staying with me for a day or two afterward. What is left unsaid here is even more poignant and present than what is written, and it leaves a haunting sense of loss that creeps up.

...

The List (H/D, rated PG)

Imitation is the best form of flattery, and Harry's got a list of methods all made up and ready to go. This fic is simply adorable. Harry comes across as so deliciously bumbling, with a child's curiosity, that one can't help but want to cuddle him. This is a crush at its greatest: all the agonizing, all the embarrassment, and all the rewards, too.

...

Untitled (H/D, rated NC-17)

Draco thinks it's time for a reunion, but Harry's still angry. I like this one because it slowly builds the story. We get the details gradually, converstaionally, and it's wonderful to find out little by little about the failed relationship. Draco's helpless desperation comes across so nicely, as well as Harry's refusal to be hurt again.

...

To Draco From Harry, and Home Sweet Home (H/D, rated PG-13-R)

Ficlet the first: Draco gets a letter. Ficlet the second: Harry's not quite sure where he stands in Draco's new home. The first one will kill you, the second revive you, and both are quite lovely. I don't usually read suicide-fics, but this first one hooked me. So painful and frenzied... The second one was just so... Harry-Draco awkward. This is their relationship to me, because they don't tend to communicate well, silly boys. But I love how much goes unspoken, but still understood.

...

And now for something a little... heh. (Remember my fascination with darkness?)

Happy Birthday (H/D, rated R)

The best birthday parties are the ones when all your friends can come. This is probably my favorite fic of the ones listed. I am not going to say much else about it, as it will spoil the considerable... twist... But I have always been a fan of dark satire. What I love is that Devon treats this as if it were quite normal. Warning: MAY SQUICK. I cackle over this one... ([livejournal.com profile] fireelemental79, you MUST read this one, it's right up your alley...)

...

So. Devon May: wonderful writer with a fantastic range, for sure. For more from her, go HERE and check out her other stuff.

It's Celebrate Devon Day on Ru's journal!
