I was on IM with Sparks getting very worked up over how much I disagree with nicknames for Draco, and she came back with this lovely gem...

the way I see it, "draco" already is a nickname. a nickname for "His Blueblooded Malfeasance Draco Malfoy, Lord of the Provinces Bish, Badass, and Broken Heart."

You know, I'm with you on that. I hate stories that shorten Draco's (gorgeous) name to Dray, Drake, Drakie-poo, etc. etc. In my story, Blaise occasionally calls Draco "Drake" as an insulting dig. To be rude and get under his skin. It bugs me to high heaven when Harry and Draco have been in a relationship for a "while" and Harry suddenly starts calling Draco "Dray". kdsha;dkfja;dfj *nails on chalkboard* Just..*twitch* no. I think the "real" Draco would baulk, and proceed to hex Harry's bits off. *L*

Yes. The one that is bugging me currently is "Co". Not sure why exactly that one irks me so much. It's just... hmm. I just CANNOT see Draco being okay with anyone using a nickname on him. It's not in character, even with Harry using it. *feels a surge of postal insanity coming on* Ha. No nicknames for me. If they are used in the right context, it doesn't bother me so much, but just as endearing names? No. Draco'd flip.

How's your story coming, by the way? I'm all caught up now, and anxious to see them try to work themselves out of the awkward little issue you left them with. ^_^

Oi! How could I have forgotten the pain-inducing "ko"???? *headwall* I think that one is the worst of the lot. Crikey, if I were Malfoy, I'd hex anyone on contact at the drop of that name.

Interesting fact: -ko is a suffix in japanese meaning petite or little. ie: Neko = Cat, koneko = kitten. Usagi = rabbit, usako = bunny.

If Draco knew that, he'd use unforgivables rather than simple hexes. *L*

As for AE...BUAHAHAHA The irony of the situation is that *I'M* anxious to see them try and work themselves out of this awkward little issue too. I think they (my h/d muses) are rather brassed of at me right now for screwing them over so badly. I've had the writer's block from hell. Today (and yesterday) is the first day that it's somewhat lifted. Oi! Don't you ever worry about developing a minor block with your stories? It's the worst!

Heh, "ko" also denotes "child", and is often the suffix of girls' names in Japan: Mariko (Child of Peace), Keiko, Hanako (Child of Flowers). The boys' names usually end in "o" in this format: Hanao, Tetsuo, etc. Same idea.

I get blocks all the damn time, no worries. The sixth chapter of Darker Magic gave me HELL, as did one of the later chapters in Nine Days Till Christmas (which was BAD, seeing as I was posting one chapter a day...). Don't worry. It'll pass, for sure.

That, indeed, is a good point. I'm not a fan of giving nicknames, though. Eh.

I don't think Draco should be shortened to anything either. Especially anything that separates it from its meaning (love Draco's name :-), but then again I'm a dragon lover so...)

Ha, if you nickname him in the right context, then it's cool. I just hate when he's okay with it as an endearing form. Because to me, Draco SOOOO wouldn't be okay with that. I think he might go all Unforgivable on our asses...

That would make an interesting crazy little story. Somebody calls Draco Drake or whatever once too many times and boom, he curses them! Insanity (or hilarity?) or just plain ol' WTHF! ensues. Yay! You should write it. :-D
