The nice thing about some of the more minor canon characters is that we really don't know all that much about them, so developing a story to include them is not too difficult. Like Blaise, or Seamus, Colin, etc, etc. There is so little to work from in the canon that making them into who you need or want them to be is easy, and actually kind of fun.
I like your Hermione. She fits my idea of her canon character: practical, caring, no-nonsense... She does strike me as having the potential to be fairly vindictive in canon, but I can only really see that when something else has happened to brush free all of her OTHER qualities, like her sensibility, her friendliness, her loyalty. And I have seen fics where that has happened. But mostly I love reading fics where the author gets Hermione right canon-wise. It's so fulfilling to know the author has taken the time to get to know her character, and it also brings to light some things about her that I might have missed in my own readings.
