i think there's a (probably small) faction of fans from the UXM#94 through probably FALL OF THE MUTANTS era that hate the "everyone knows kung fu and are ninjas" that, really, was the fault of the artists who seemed to be only able to draw that kind of action. Gambit was the first in the XMen to sort of be that, so he's the respresentation of that "all-great Evil"... plus, the ret-conning of MUTANT MASSACRE-era history (and canonical fact, by the bye) that says that HE led the Marauders to the Morlocks when in fact, they FOLLOWED a Morlock named Tommi to the Morlocks and THEN ret-coning him to be a time traveller and influencing Mr. Sinister in some way... bah!
At any rate, he takes the unfortunate brunt of fans who liked UXM during that era who detest the kung-fu fighting trend that comics had shortly after his inclusion to the team.
But you know... it made them lots o' money, so i guess it couldn't be all that bad...
