That's really wonderful. I'm a lurker on your journal and I also used to run Darkest Magic: Harry/Draco ship website as zenshosukida but this is my new userid.
I am applying under the JET pgrogramme this year to teach there next September. The interview is in December. I was shocked to hear you did not make the JET programme before and this makes me worried for myself!
Do you have any idea why you were rejected? I myself am a High School English Teacher and I have an official teaching degree. I also speak and read Japanese. But the main difficulty for me is: I am not caucasian :( I heard they favour caucasians?...
When are you planning to go? I know it's a far far stretch since you hardly know me (believe me I've read nearly all your fics) but it would be great to meet up if we both make it there next year!
Hi there! Can I just thank you again for including me on the Darkest Magic interview list? That was a real treat. I know you are no longer moderating that site, but I wanted to thank you for thinking of me. ^_^
Have fun applying for JET. I do not wish to discourage you by any means, so don't read this as such. My experience with JET was that they have enough applicants to be extremely choosy about who they accept. They are probably the most popular of thse programs, so that makes sense. It looks like you have plenty of great qualifications (keep in mind that I am not a teacher, nor do I have a teaching degree, so you already have a more appropriate resume than I did!). As for why I was rejected? Could be anything as far as I know. It might have been something as simple as missing a single piece of the app (even though I triple-checked that thing, let me tell you...) or it might be that they didn't think I was qualified enough, or that maybe they just had so many apps that they had to cut someone out. But the process did tell me one thing: that I really wanted to go. And also keep in mind that I didn't even make it to the interview stage, so you are already looking good!
I also heard that the more American or Western you are, the more interested they are in you, but that could be just a rumor. I heard rumors that they prefer people without any experience with Japan or Japanese as well, but again, this is not from a reliable source at JET, so take it with a substantial pile of salt. ^_^
I will say this, though: I am finding the NOVA process and program to be much less stressful so far, as well as less constrictive. NOVA is not tied into the school system over in Japan, so they can let you start your term whenever you are free to do so instead of sticking to a specific time of year. But I have heard wonderful things about JET. It's why I applied, after all! I think it's just about which system works best for each individual, you know?
I applied to be there in early January. How about you?
