Question for my f-list

Question:

I want to post links to music that goes with my WIP. What kind of trouble can I get into for uploading songs and sending them out via YouSendIt? I really don't see the problem, as it's sort of like copying cds or cassettes for friends, and I'm not making money off of it, but I am wondering if anyone knows any rules for this kind of thing.

Uh, well, you know why Napster got sued?
It is a copyright violation. On the other hand, lots of people do it, and only like 1 in a million gets sued for it.

Well, shite. Then I guess I will take that off my list. I didn't know it would be such a huge thing, because frankly, you can't stop someone from making a copy of something for a friend. The original person already paid for it, and they are not selling it to the other person. It's like trying to police video copies. Why the hell do they give us the equipment if they are just going to outlaw it?

I wouldn't worry too much - I do it all the time. It's like the fear of violating JKR's copyright when we post fanfic, at least to me. If you flock the entry, no record company will ever find it. Believe me, YSI is full of albums liek whoa for uploading.

Yeah, but I can't f-lock to entry because it's a fic I want people to read. *sigh* Oh well. I'll just settle for a list of songs, and snippets where I can find them.

[identity profile] geoviki.livejournal.com 2006-12-12 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Well, you really don't have to flock it. I never do. Have you noticed how much music I actually post, and they've not come after me! ;-)

Glad you liked my interview - it was fun to talk on and on about myself.

Best way to do it is probably post the fic not f-locked with a list of songs (maybe with links to the lyrics), then post the actual songs in a f-locked post.
About the copying for a friend thing...I think technically, they can sue you for that too, it's just that since it's not online and public, it's impossible for them to catch you at it, and since manual copying is so very low volume, it wouldn't be worth their attorney's fees.

Ooh, congrats on your darkest magic interview! *loves*

Don't know anything about the answer to your question, but I had to tell you I love your Talking Heads icon. It's so sinister!!!

Hahaha, thank you! That was made as a gift for me by [livejournal.com profile] fireelemental79. It's my Christmas icon.

[identity profile] piratesmile331.livejournal.com 2006-12-12 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
It's one of my favourite songs of theirs. It was just so funny to see it on a Christmas icon. [livejournal.com profile] fireelemental79 is definitely a little twisted! I love it!

[identity profile] rurounihime.livejournal.com 2006-12-12 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Ha, twisted is a nice way of saying it. She'd love you for this comment. *laughs*

[identity profile] piratesmile331.livejournal.com 2006-12-12 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Feel free to share it with her!

*wallups the commety yoj but in the best possible fashion, with pillows and stuff....*

*finds herself embaressed and thus backs away slowly, peering out between fingers*

Okay, looking at those two statements, I have no idea what I'm saying. Thank you for the compliment :-D.

[identity profile] piratesmile331.livejournal.com 2006-12-12 09:00 am (UTC)(link)
PLease don't be embarassed. I loved it! And I meant that you were twisted in the nicest way possible, also.

So...I work in the music industry...

It is in fact a copyright violation to share you music.
Even making cds and cassettes for friends is actually a violation.

In general, they are only going after people who distribute large servers of music. But if they wanted to come after you for sharing one song, they could. For instance, with Napster and other file sharing programs, huge servers worth of music were made available and the music companies had no real way of tracking down individuals, so they just tracked down Napster.

It is unlikely that they would come after you for sharing one song; it is even unlikely that they would know that you are sharing it in the first place.

On my regular rant...The business model is going to have to change. Big music companies are trying to stop the inevitable, but it is an impossible task. And in trying to stop the tidal wave, they are making themselves into the bad guys.

If you are worried about it, maybe you could still post the artist and titles...a link to a place we could listen to it legally like myspace or the bands website???

I personally love to get the complete world that writers think up and often times that includes music.

:)
