Oh, basically when you start up a gmail account (Google email), you get five invites, or chances to email a friend and offer them their own gmail account. Gmail is cool: free, unlimited space as far as I can tell, no spam (I've had it for three months and no spam yet), and the emails and responses are formatted like conversations. I think whenever someone you've invited starts up their account, you get more invites to give away, which would explain why suddenly I have more when I had none.
