Anybody ever wonder what happened to all of Hermione's Muggle friends after she went to Hogwarts? I mean, she's an 11-year-old girl. She's not just friendless until she meets the wonder-duo, is she?
I don't think Hermione had friends before Hogwarts, but even if she did, it wouldn't be surprising to me that she'd abandon them. She's tried hard to abandon her entire Muggle life, avoiding her parents and never discussing them.
It's really depressing to me, to think that she is attempting to abandon the life she grew up with. Especially her parents. I don't interpret her actions that way at all.
I don't think it's necessarily true that Hermione never discusses her parents, any more than it's true that Harry never shaves or brushes his teeth. She could talk about them all the time, but if it has nothing to do with the plot (and JKR has made it quite clear that the elder Grangers have no plot relevance), it's not going in the books. People expect the books to be encyclopedic, and they're not.
That being the case, it's entirely possible that Hermione does have friends from primary school that she writes to and hangs out with during the holidays, and we simply don't hear about them because they aren't important.
Definitely a good point to bring up. Because putting every little last detail into a story does not often make it better; rather, it makes it cumbersome. You have to be very careful how you incorporate those minor details.
