I saw a lovely fanciful movie last night: Big Fish, directed by Tim Burton. Ah, he is the MASTER. I think the best combination in movies is this wonderful trio: Tim Burton directing, Danny Elfman doing the music, and Johnny Depp being someone out-there and otherworldly. *cough Edward Scissorhands Sleepy Hollow Ed Wood cough cough* I enjoyed Big Fish. It's a feel-good movie about fantasy and learning exactly when to let go of reality. Also about a man's relationship with his estranged son. Sadly, Johnny Depp was not in it, but Ewan McGregor was an absolute kick.

Sighhhhh... I do adore Tim Burton.

In other news... getting the sixth chapter of The Fourth Unforgivable together (brace yourselves... Voldemort is off to counseling), and I am working hard on Simply Charming ch5. Won't be too long now for either of them. When I post the new chapters of each, I'll link to the rest of each story as well. I've recently found the wherewithal to get going on these again, after a slew of one-shots, and have been spending time reacquainting myself with my laptop. One-shots will be up here as well, probably sooner than the chapters, but no worries.

Here's a fun little tidbit: I am currently attempting a Dean/Millicent story! Ought to be rather interesting. More as it develops.

Note to self: remember to EAT. I have been rather forgetful in that department lately, which is nice in some ways, because then I don't over-eat, BUT... not a good habit to get into.

Remind me to tell you my story about hearing Electrical Storm for the first time someday. ;-) It's pretty incredible, but I have the pictures online to prove it happened!

Oh yes, please do! I love that song. It's so... vibrant. The melodies are intoxicating. Such a sad tone, but at the same time, elegant.

...It helps, of course, that U2 is one of my all-time favorite bands. My fave song of theirs is Sunday, Bloody Sunday.

The first time I heard Electrical Storm, I was driving in my car and my friends were talking. Not all that interesting, but I remember being struck very forcefully by how lovely it was.

Zootopian Dublin Tour 2002 :-)

Okay then! I'm warning you, it's a long and incredible story.

Before I get caught up in it, let me just say that U2 is my favorite band as well, and Sunday, Bloody Sunday is also my favorite song of theirs! We have good taste in music! :-)

Okay, so it all started because I used to post on "Zootopia," the forum for U2's official website. I was on there pretty frequently in 2001, because I was on a U2 high, what with going to shows from the Elevation tour, etc, and got to know some of the people on there pretty well. So one day in late October, this woman named Zabie jokingly posted a message that wouldn't it be really cool if we could all meet up in Dublin that summer to stay at The Clarence Hotel, which Bono and the Edge co-own, and then go and visit all the old U2 haunts in the city, like places they've filmed videos, etc.

A lot of people replied, agreeing that that would be really fun, etc. So I emailed Zabie and told her that I thought it sounded like a really good idea, and that if she wanted to seriously do it I'd help her organize the trip for everyone, since it would be a really big task for only one person.

We started working together, meeting on AIM or the phone at least 2 or 3 times a week for trip meetings, which was difficult since I was in Maryland and she was in Montreal. The trip started gaining notice, and was getting bigger and bigger. I came up with the idea to base the trip on a tour, since U2 had just finished up the Elevation Tour, and that's how the Zootopian Dublin Tour 2002 began.

Soon we were having t-shirts made by another Zootopian, and selling them for a U2-sponsored charity, Children of Chernobyl, and about fifty people were planning on coming. I researched and compiled a list of 50 U2 tourist places in Dublin into a tourbook, and Zabie made up these cool tags that looked like backstage passes with each person's screenname on it so that we would know who was who when we all met up. Zabie and I got in contact with U2's management and let them know that a huge load of U2 fans were coming, as well as the Clarence and U2.com's webmaster. I won't go into all the detail of the work, because it was insane, and I'm sure you get the general idea. We continued planning for a little less than a year, because the trip was scheduled for the end of July 2002.

Anyway, so it all came together and we went and were having a fantastic time. We didn't count on the band being in town, because at the time I believe the Edge had just gotten married in France. I think it was just a few days before we left that Zabie and I found out that they would be recording some new material at Hanover Studios while we were there.

We went to the studios the first day we were there, which was a day before the actual convention was supposed to start, but didn't see anything.

The next day was our first night's stay at The Clarence (it's really expensive, so we didn't want to stay there for the whole week, though it was so nice we ended up staying 6 days anyway! LOL), and while the hotel manager was greeting us in the lobby (we had spoken with her on the phone a lot about the group coming), I see The Edge walk in and stand watching us while he waited for the elevator. Meanwhile, I'm trying to remain calm, but probably did a crap job of it. So he goes in the elevator, and I practically die b/c none of the girls with me saw him because they were listening to the stupid manager!

So I'm trying to remember how to breath, and then in walks Bono! He heads off into an adjacent room. The day before, Zabie had teasingly kept saying "Look, Rain! There's Larry!" (since he's my favorite), so when I told her I had just seen Bono (her favorite) she thought I was only joking at first, LOL.

So we were beyond excited at this point. But we couldn't do much, because we had scheduled to meet the other Zootopians at Docker's Pub that afternoon. We told them all that we'd seen Bono and Edge, and so after meeting everyone and drinking a couple pints, I decided to show some of the people who had just arrived where Hanover Studios were while Zabie went back to the hotel.
While we were there, we found out from a security guy that the band was currently in the building recording. I called Zabie, but she wasn't interested in coming, figuring that we were waiting around for nothing. But a little while later, Adam Clayton comes out and talks with us for about 20 minutes, signing autographs and taking pictures, etc. He was really nice, and laughed when I made a funny, which made me feel like the coolest person in the world, LOL.

After he went back inside to work some more, I called Zabie and told her to get her butt over to the studios, which she wisely did. However, we all began to lose heart after standing out there for a while, and so Zabie, myself, and a couple others decided to head off...

As we're walking away, we see a security guy pulling Bono's car out from the garage. Some people decided to hang around to see if he would stop to talk, but me, Zabie, and I think 4 other Zootopians kept on walking, figuring that since he was driving in our direction anyways, he'd stop if he wanted to when he got to us.

He DID stop for the others, and we were looking at them, contemplating if we should go back, and he leaned his head out of his open car door and waved to us. We waved back, but kept on walking away, hoping that if we acted aloof his ego would make him want to stop for us, too. ;-)

As he started to drive again towards us, Zabie and another girl, Caley, stuck out their thumbs as if they were trying to hitch a ride, just to be funny. And he stopped!

At first he was on his cell phone, but once he got off, he got out of the car and shook hands, took pictures, etc, though we kept telling him he didn't have to since he must have been tired from working all day.

He asked us where we were staying at, and we said "The Clarence, of course!"

Here comes the most amazing part:

He then says, "Well, this is a pretty bad part of town, and you girls shouldn't be walking alone. Why don't I give you a lift?", to which we were of course shocked and near collapsing from trying to keep our cool.

It was really squishy, because there were I think six of us Zootopians, plus Bono, and he has a five seater Mercedes. So Zabie and Caley shared the front passenger seat, and I sat sorta in-the-middle/behind-the-driver on someone's lap, so I of course HAD to balance myself by keeping my hand on Bono's headrest ;-). I just kept thinking, "If I move my hand an inch, I could touch Bono's hair," LOL.

Here's where Electrical Storm comes in:

Bono asks us if we want to hear some of the music they had been working on, which we of course said "yes" to! So he put in the demo for Electrical Storm, and BLASTED it (he had an amazing sound system!! Not surprising.) and even sang along to it while he drove us back to Temple Bar. When the song was over, he asked us what we thought, and we all said it was amazing, obviously.

When he dropped us off, it was so funny, because all these people on the sidewalk stopped and were staring at us getting out of Bono's car, LOL. But Zabie and I didn't get out right away, since we had a job to do :-). I had a copy of our Zootopian schedule for the week, and gave it to him, to which he replied, "OH! You guys are the Zootopians!," while he scanned the paper, and added, "Well, I'll definitely be orbiting your planet."

And that's the story of how I heard Electrical Storm for the first time, LOL!! Exciting, no?

Just as a small closing, later that night when Zabie and I were up super-late at the Clarence working on stuff for the trip in The Study (a residents area of The Clarence) by ourselves, we saw Bono walk in again. He didn't come in the room, but he sorta poked his head in when he saw the two of us sitting there and smiled, to which I almost melted.

I didn't meet him or the rest of the band the rest of the week because I felt bad going back to the studios to disturb them again. Other Zootopians did, however, and met them several more times. Though none of the rest of them got a car ride! ;-)
If you want to see pictures of me in the car or check out more on it, I'll give you a link to our trip's website! Also, our "Tour" was covered by U2.com, who asked us to write up some daily diaries for them of what we were doing while we were there, along with pictures. It was really cool, because for a while I had my picture with Adam Clayton up on U2.com's main page. The articles and pictures are still in the site's archives for July or August 2002, if you're interested! I used the same screenname then, too.

...So. The end.

Well, I did warn you that it was long and incredible, no?
Oh my Lord...

*head explodes from wishing to be RainSW6*

That is seriously the BEST story ever! I would have dropped dead on the spot... or melted into a puddle of ooze if Bono had offered me a ride! That is so cool and now I am so jealous, and you are so awesome, and my vocab has SO gone down to just the word "so".

Anytime you want to organize another trip, drop me a line! *grins*

That was lovely... *sighhhhhh*

1. Love Tim Burton - love his dark imagery and creative imagination.
2. Big Fish is a winner simply because I am in love with Ewan McGregor. *drools*
3. U2 is also one of my all-time favorite bands - Pride is my favorite song.

Right on all counts. Just one more thing... you could say Danny Elfman is my muse... *listens serenely to eeriness-a-la-Danny-Elfman*

Agreed - how could I possibly leave Danny off my list. I LOVE Oingo Boingo (who couldn't love Halloween shows at Irvine Meadows?) and his movie scores are pure genius to me. I have more of his scores on CD than any other.

I apologize for my egregious omission.

*blushes*

Bwahaaaa... it's all good. I adore his Music For a Darkened Theatre Vols. 1 and 2... the soundtrack to Nightmare Before Christmas is outstanding, and I love the tracks he wrote for Dead Presidents, Dolores Claibourne, and Black Beauty. He's crazy-awesome. And his singing voice... whoo... He was Jack in Nightmare.
*fans self*

I take the Nightmare soundtrack to work when I need a good rousing round of "Making Christmas...making Christmas.."

The score for Batman (another Burton, Elfman masterpiece) is another one of my favorites.

There was a movie recently, that I saw Elfman did the score, and it knocked me outta my socks as it was a complete departure from what I was used to. If only I cold remember the name of the movie...

Alas, I do not know which movie you are talking about. The only one I can think that he did recently besides Big Fish is the Hulk, and probably Spiderman 2. But I doubt either of those are the one you're thinking of.
Have you heard the soundtrack to Somersby? Quite lovely, and not at all what I am used to from him.

Date: 2004-08-15 10:11 pm (UTC)From: [identity profile] spacetweenears.livejournal.com
I had to look it up, but it was the score to Chicago. That definitely surprised me. I had no clue that Somersby was him. I watched part of the movie on cable not too long ago.

REALLY???? CHICAGO???

*gasps*

I had no idea. That seems so... un-Elfman! Crazy. I love it. I guess I will have to go grab that movie.

Hey, go visit [livejournal.com profile] abbycadabra. She's got a posted discussion about JK Rowling's treatment of villains that is really quite thought-provoking.

Yeah I went to IMDb to verify - the songs were from the Broadway musical but the score music is his. I remember sitting in the theater going - "did I just read that right??! Danny Elfman scored THIS??!"

I shall go visit - I love good discussions like that.

Let me know what you think of it. This one is worrying me, to some extent.
